WHAT IS THE ISOLATION METHOD

Jaime Vendera’s approach to training is unlike any other method available. Although he believes in the importance of using vocal scales and does use them in his teaching, he believed there should be an easier way to train the voice without hours of scales, leaving more time for singing. Thus he created the Isolation Method, a non-scale system of voice training.

Jaime studied for years performing hundreds of different vocal scales in a search to increase his range and power. His favorite scales were presented in the system Jim Gillette’s Vocal Power. Ironically enough, Jim Gillette was also Jaime’s favorite singer. Jaime strived to increase his range in order to hit piercing highs like Jim. Through doing Jim’s exercises and keeping many notebooks of tips, tricks and tactics for singers, Jaime was indeed able to increase his range. But eventually, he got a little burnt out on doing vocal scales.

One day in 1996, a friend of Jaime’s asked him “Can you show me a quick way to hit those high notes?” Jaime thought for a moment, then grabbed a small instrument known as a pitch wheel off his stand (a pitch wheel is a round chromatic instrument that sounds like a harmonica, used to help find the key of a song, give a choir a note guide where to start, or for tuning an instrument such as a guitar) and after playing a random note on the pitch wheel, said to his friend, “Try to do an octave slide like this…” Jaime then slid up one octave in full voice, imitating a sliding scream that was Jim Gillette’s trademark scream. His friend followed suit and they continued doing these one octave slides for several more notes until his friend had gained several notes in full voice that he had never hit before, thus enabling him to hit the high notes he yearned for. Ironically, his friend went home that same day and tried to sing those notes along with some songs, but to no avail. Which eventually lead Jaime to the assumption that training on open vowels CAN increase your range, but only by the application of regularly singing will you be able to incorporate those notes into your singing voice.

A bell went off in Jaime’s head and the Isolation method was born. He realized he could use this application to effortlessly reach those higher notes and instill upon the mind and muscles the correct coordination and then sing regularly to eventually extend the singing range.

Over the years Jaime tried hundreds of different exercise combinations using this approach until he created three different ways to use three different exercises in order to work the muscles involved to strengthen the muscles involved in singing while minimizing his practice time. He learned that by “Isolating” an individual pitch, you could strengthen the coordination at that spot and continue to improve and increase both your lower and higher range.

The three different exercises that complete the system are the Falsetto Slide, the Transcending Tone and the Siren. By applying different combinations of each exercise to either sustain a note for long periods of time, slide through the entire vocal range or transcend from one vocal color to another, a singer could learn to sing much higher or lower in falsetto, full voice, or a mixture of the two, at any volume with any inflection.

So in theory, Jaime believed a person could learn to sing as high as they wanted in full voice (without relying on switching to falsetto unless for a desired effect), eliminate any sign of a vocal break at any audible level with any type of tonal variation (such as a darker or lighter tone), or any amount of grit or distortion, all within months! The need for two years of vocal lessons to gain 2-3 notes was over!

By applying these exercises with certain key technical principles such as correct breath support, redirection of the voice and resonance expansion, you could create a great vocal instrument!
